Thiruvalla: Kamal Haasan on Monday recalled Malayalam actor MG Soman having his leg bandaged for the first time and developing a bond of brotherhood over the years.
At a memorial gathering organized on the occasion of Soman’s 25th death anniversary, Kamal paid tribute to the actor whom he loves like a big brother.
“Although Soman was 12 years older than me, we were close friends. Whenever we were in Kerala we stayed together. Participating in any event organized in Soman’s honor is a family affair for me,” said Haasan.
At the event, Haasan received the MG Soman Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, comprising a purse of Rs 5 lakh, was presented by Minister for Cultural Affairs VN Vasavan.
Receiving the award, Kamal Haasan said he would set up model theaters and theater clubs to honor Soman’s memory.
Government to keep Soman’s legacy alive
Inaugurating the memorial service, Minister Vasavan said that he doubts whether we have respected Soman’s legacy as it deserves.
“The state government will help keep his memories alive. The necessary funds for this will be included in the next budget”, said the minister.
The event was attended by many celebrities including Vidhubala, Kunchan, Cherian Kalpakavadi, Janardhanan and Vijayaraghavan who reminisced about their fond memories with the actor.
The event was presided over by director Blessy, president of the foundation. Several film personalities such as actress Seema, Hariharan, Badhran, director Renji Panicker, collector Dr Divya S Ayyar, former Rajya Sabha vice president Prof PJ Kurien, MLA Saji Cherian also spoke at the event.
