Apart from releasing Tamil movies, Over-the-top (OTT) video streaming platforms have created more interesting web series in regional languages during 2022.
Amazon Prime Video released its first long-form Tamil original script Suzhal – WhirlwindWritten and created by renowned filmmaker Pushkar–Gayatri. Vadhandhi: Velonie’s fableFounded by Andrew Louis from Pushkar–Gayatri House, and Putham Pudhu Kaalai: Vidiyaadha they were also released on the platform this year.
An Amazon Prime Video spokesperson said: “Following the success of Suzhal – Whirlwind and Vadhandhi: Velonie’s Fable, We are excited to bring you the Chennai chapter of the US original anthology series. Modern Love Chennai in 2023 There are other original series in the pipeline for 2023 Karam Sweet coffeea drama about an epic road trip featuring three generations of women from the same family, and townhorror series adapted from a graphic novel.’
Manish Kalra, Chief Business Officer, Zee5 India, stated that in 2023, the group will continue to invest in original and acquired content. “As seen in 2022 Anantham With Prakash Raj, we have already announced Nilamellam Ratham with Vetrimaaran. Viewers can expect content on a similar scale next year as well,” he said. He also stated that Vilangu was Zee5’s most viewed Tamil web series. For Zee5, Tamil is the second largest in terms of viewer base.
During 2022, starring actor Vijay the beast (Tamil) has been trending in the World Top 10 along with the Hindi version of non-English films. The film was in the Top 10 in 13 countries on Netflix. There are other Tamil titles releasing on Netflix in 2022 in Kalagathalaivan, love today, Nitham Oru Vaanam, Elephant Whisperers, Sign, Poochand, Natchathiram Nagargiradhu and the jester.
Zee5 released a total of 21 Tamil movies on the platform. Among them, there are 14 original films and seven dubbed ones. The most popular Tamil movies on Zee5 were five Valimai, RRR (Tamil), Veetla Vishesham, Yaanai and Veeramae Vaagai Soodum.
An Amazon Prime Video spokesperson said, “We released about 30 Tamil-language titles on Prime Video as live releases for licensed films and as digital releases shortly after their theatrical release. Additionally, a large number of our originals (both Indian and international and licensed content ) were localized with Tamil subtitles and dubbing, allowing consumers to watch content in their preferred language.”
“Indeed, our first Telugu Amazon Original Ammuand our biggest series of the year The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Poweras well as other international originals, for example the boys, List of terminals and Peripheral they were launched with tamil localization”.
OTT players said more than 50% of the Tamil film audience came from other states and about 25% from international markets.
