Hyderabad: City police arrested two persons on Saturday for illegally procuring and storing large quantities of Calcium Carbide at home. During this search, the police team seized 500 barrels of Kaltzio Karburo. The estimated value of the seized chemical is reported to be Rs 40 lakh in the market.

Following credible inputs from sources, Musheerabad police and Commissioner’s Task Force, South Zone team launched a joint operation at new Bakaram location and arrested Joshua Caleb (35) and Issac Clinton (32) for illegal possession of Calcium Carbide at their residence.

According to a police statement on Saturday, the accused couple, who were brothers, did not have a license to acquire the harmful material, nor did they obtain permission from the relevant authorities.

Calcium carbide is used to ripen raw fruit and when exposed to water or moisture, the chemical produces highly flammable and explosive Acetylene gas which can cause fire and explosion. The arrested persons were buying this chemical illegally and without any license from states like Rajasthan and Gujarat, and would later sell it to poor customers, the statement said.
