English all-rounder Sam Curran becomes most expensive IPL player ever, breaks Ishan Kishan’s record

NEW DELHI : All-rounder Sam Curran on Friday became the most expensive cricketer ever bought by any Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in its 15-year history.

The 24-year-old English cricketer was bought to gouge out his eyes 18.5 crore on the first day of the ongoing IPL auctions in Kerala for the Punjab Kings for the 2023 season.

Curran broke the record of cricketer Ishan Kishan, who was picked last season 15.25 crore by Mumbai Indians.

“He is probably one of the best players in the world, if not the best. He brings good balance to our team,” Punjab Kings manager Ness Wadia said about Curran in a video posted by the official IPL Twitter handle.

The other big buys in IPL 2023 were Cameron Green, who was sold to Mumbai Indians. 17.50 crore, while Chennai Super Kings bought English player Ben Stokes 16.25 million.

Among other photo highlights, Shivam Mavi was bagged by Gujarat Titans 6 crore, Joshua Little was sold to Gujarat Titans 4.4 crore, Will Jacks was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore 3.2 crore, while Mayank Dagar was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad 1.8 million

Till 8.30 pm on Friday night, Punjab Kings had the highest player purse. 12.2 crore in their kitty while Sunrisers Hyderabad also had around 6.55 crores left in his bag.

A total of 405 players were to go under the hammer on December 23, of which 273 were Indian players and 132 were foreign players, of which 4 were from allied nations. 2 million was the highest reserve price.

The Tata-sponsored IPL 2023 will start in March 2023 and will continue till the end of May.
