LUCKNOW: A Lucknow court in Allahabad court on Friday granted bail to the Kerala journalist. Siddique Kappa In the Money Laundering Prevention Law (PMLA) the file filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He will now be released from prison after 26 months on bail, his lawyer said.

Kappa was arrested along with three others near Mathura in October 2020 on their way to Hathras to report the rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl. All of them were booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Police arrested three other people on suspicion of providing assistance.
The ED probe was then inserted against seven UP Police in his charge sheet he accused them of money laundering and illegal foreign financing. The ED then filed a case against them under PMLA.
September 9, 2022 Supreme Court granted bail to Kappan in the case brought under UAPA by the UP Police. But he was not released as the ED case against him under PMLA was still pending. Now he has been granted bail in the PMLA case as well.
According to Kappan’s lawyer Mohammad Dhanish KS, this was the only case where Kappan was awaiting bail. Now, he will be released from Lucknow jail after fulfilling bail conditions in both UAPA and PMLA cases. “In the case of UAPA, the verification of the guarantee is still pending,” Dhanish KS told TOI.
The driver who was taking Alam, Kappan and others to Hathras has already been granted bail. But he, too, remains in jail awaiting bail, he said, adding that the bail order approved Friday was only for Kappan. Others will have to apply for bail separately.
