HC, Hostel curfew, Medical college, Kerala High Court, Kerala University of Health Sciences

Kochi: The High Court has asked all medical colleges in the state to follow the Kerala government’s order to relax hostel restrictions. Justice Devan Ramachandran was hearing a plea against the 9.30 pm closing of the Kozhikode medical college hostel.

The new order states that male and female students from second grade onwards could enter the hostel after 9.30 pm, with their names entered in the movement register. First year students should enter early.

Asked whether students were allowed to leave the hostel after 9.30 pm if necessary, the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) said they could go outside for urgent matters, with the permission of the in-charge.

The petition also sought permission to use the main reading room of the Kozhikode medical college till 11 pm. But the government has announced that more staff will be needed to keep the reading room open after 9pm.

Meanwhile, the KUHS has told the high court that the shelters were not overnight tourist abodes. In an affidavit filed in court, the university argued that people attain maturity at the age of 25 and that what they say before that age cannot be accepted.
