HC stays single-bench order directing Kerala varsity senate to nominate to search committee member

Kochi: The Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has set aside the order of the Single Bench presiding over the Kerala University senate to appoint a member of the search selection committee to be constituted for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor (VC).

Previously, Banku Bakarra has given a period of 30 days for this purpose.

Now, the Division Bench has set aside that December 8 order in an appeal challenging the Single Bench order.

“When the senate appoints a member, the chancellor (governor) has to issue a notification about the formation of a search committee. After that, the vice-chancellor has to be appointed within a time limit. The governor who is the vice-chancellor. Kerala universities can bring legal actions if the senate does not appoint its member. has within the given period,” said the board.

However, if the Senate needs more time, it can approach the court, he added.

The single bench order came on the heels of a petition moved by Alappuzha-born S Jayaram, seeking dissolution of the senate if they are unable to appoint a member to the selection committee.
