December 21, Wednesday: After the recent developments in the Bay of Bengal, parts of Tamil Nadu will witness intense wet weather this Christmas.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rains are likely at isolated places along the south coast of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, December 25.

In particular, IMD’s Chennai regional meteorological center has predicted these heavy showers in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts.

Further, the weather department adds that Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall in the next three days. These showers will be accompanied by thunder and lightning on Saturday, December 24.

Generally, these conditions will be driven by a well-marked low pressure area, which will concentrate in a depression over Southwest Bengal, off the coast of Sri Lanka, during the next 24 hours. From there, it is likely to move west-southwest, across Sri Lanka towards the Comorin area.

This system is likely to produce gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph with gusts of 60-64 kmph over Southwest Bengal and along Sri Lankan coasts in the coming days.

Due to gusty winds and rough seas, the weather department has warned fishermen not to venture out to sea during the duration of this system.
