IIT Kharagpur plans to go global; will set up institute in Malaysia

Kharagpur: IIT Kharagpur is looking to set up an engineering institute in Malaysia as part of a globalization plan, its director VK Tewary said. The institute aims to be among the top 10 in the world.

IIT Kharagpur aims to become a global benchmark for educational excellence by establishing IIT Malaysia, which will be an important step for the institute to establish its footprint in the international domain, he said.

Tewary, however, did not give a timeline for the establishment of the new university in Malaysia, nor did he give any indication as to whether it would be a joint venture with any other institute.

He also said that the institute had compiled a collection of 75 innovations made by its staff and researchers.

Listing the successful innovations of IIT Kharagpur’s project in the last two years, he said that while Covirap’s coronavirus diagnostic kit sold for 6.7 million euros, many other successful new devices fetched more than 1 million. “We are supporting 25 identified innovations,” he said.

“From Vinod Gupta to Sunder Pichai, many ex-IIT KGPiars, numbering in thousands, brought laurels to the institute,” Tewary said at its 68th convocation on Saturday.

Nine life fellows of the institute were honored along with 40 alumni. Nine students were also awarded gold medals in their respective fields of study.
