IMD forecast: Moderate rainfall likely in THESE southern states today


Light rain with thunder and lightning is likely at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tamil Nadu and Karaikal districts in the coming hours, according to the forecast of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre.

In an official statement, the weather office said light to moderate rain is likely in Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Thirupattur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thiruchirappalli, Nilgiris and Thirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. Puducherry in the next 1 to 3 hours, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday also predicted a depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to bring heavy rains over the southern states in the next few days.

Stating the same, the weather office said in a tweet that the depression over Southwest Bengal remained almost stationary for the last 6 hours and was centered around 540 km east-southeast of Chennai on December 23. Moving slowly west-southwest across Sri Lanka towards the Comorin area over the next 48 hours.

1) Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places and south coastal Tamil Nadu on 25th and 26th December.

2) Light to moderate rain at isolated places with heavy rainfall at isolated places over south Kerala is likely on 26th December.

3) Light to moderate rainfall at isolated places with heavy rainfall is likely over Lakshadweep Islands on 27th December 2022.

4) Gusty winds of 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast till December 25, 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph 60 up to 26 km/h and decrease until morning.

5) Fair weather with wind speed of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely in Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area along south Tamil Nadu and west coasts of Sri Lanka, becoming light wind speed on 24th December 45 It will reach -55 km/h. On December 25 and 26, a gust of 65 km/h.

6) Bad weather with wind speed of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over Lakshadweep Islands and near Southeast Arabian Sea on December 27.
