India's latest move to track virus variants amid China's new Covid Horror

India to increase genome sequencing of positive cases to track coronavirus variants

New Delhi:

The recent COVID-19 horror stories reported from China and the US have prompted the center to be prepared for any eventuality. The Ministry of Health has written to all states to increase genome sequencing of positive cases to track coronavirus variants through the INSACOG network.

“Given the sudden influx of cases occurring in Japan, the United States of America, the Republic of Korea, Brazil and China, it is imperative to prepare whole genome sequencing of positive case samples for variant tracking…in the INSACOG network,” said Rajesh Bhushan, secretary of the state health ministry. in the letter addressed to all.

“Such an exercise will enable early detection of new variants circulating in the country and facilitate the adoption of necessary public health measures,” said Mr. Bhushan.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium or INSACOG is a consortium of more than 50 laboratories to monitor the genomic variations of the COVID-19 virus. Genome sequencing is a technique used to identify and understand the characteristics of new virus strains.

The Center said that the sample of all positive cases should be sent daily to INSACOG genome sequencing laboratories mapped to all states and Union Territories.

The center said around 35 lakh Covid cases continue to be reported every week across the world. India recorded 112 new Covid cases this morning; active cases fell to 3,490, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

Crematoria across China are struggling to cope with the large number of bodies as the country grapples with a wave of Covid cases, with authorities saying it is impossible to keep up, AFP news agency reported.

Cases are rising across China, hospitals are struggling and pharmacy shelves are being stripped bare in the wake of the government’s sudden decision to lift years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing.

The United States has warned that the outbreak is of global concern, given the possibility of further mutations and the size of China’s economy.

In the Chinese capital Beijing, local authorities reported just five deaths from Covid on Tuesday, up from two the previous day, AFP reported.

Health officials in Beijing said only those who died directly from respiratory failure caused by the virus would be counted in the Covid death statistics.

“Today after being infected with the Omicron variant, the main cause of death remains the underlying diseases,” Wang Guiqiang of the First Hospital of Peking University told reporters.

The US State Department said the rise is now a matter of international concern. “We know that any time a virus is spreading, it’s out in the wild, it has the potential to mutate and pose a threat to people everywhere,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said. “Given the size of China’s GDP, the toll of the virus is alarming worldwide [gross domestic product]Given the size of the Chinese economy,” he added.
