Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will hold a meeting with health ministers of states and Union territories on Friday in view of the rise in Covid-19 cases in parts of the world. Mandaviya made his motu statement in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday regarding India’s preparedness. “We are constantly monitoring the situation. There are no direct flights between China and India, but people are coming from other routes,” he said. He said the aim is to ensure that an unknown variant of the virus does not enter India and at the same time ensure there is no disruption to travel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned against complacency in a high-level meeting yesterday and recommended masking and preventive doses as Covid cases were on the rise in China and other countries. Modi told officials to strengthen surveillance measures, especially at international airports. He also emphasized the need to ensure that the entire Covid infrastructure is maintained at a high level of readiness in terms of equipment, processes and human resources at all levels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia aims for a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine and that the fighting should end as soon as possible, The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reported. “Our goal … is to end this conflict. We are working on it and we will continue to strive … so we will try to end everything, and the sooner the better,” Putin told reporters.

Putin’s comments were met with skepticism by Ukraine and its allies.
