A group of at least 30 youths, armed with sticks, attacked a Christmas program in Purola village of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Friday, allegedly allegedly carrying out forced conversions there.
Police later arrested six people, including pastor Lazarus Cornelius and his wife Sushma Cornelius, who were assaulted by men they say belonged to a Hindu organization, and later released them saying the matter has been settled amicably.
The attack on the Hope and Life Center in the village, 150 kilometers from the state capital Dehradun, took place around noon. The pastor belongs to Union Church, Mussoorie, he led the prayers.
The BJP government in the state has introduced the Anti-Conversion Bill in the recently passed assembly and received the Governor’s assent today. Locals say there have been previous attacks on religious minorities, including attacks on Christians and Muslims.
Police have yet to release more details.
