Chennai: After a prolonged dry spell, Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu experienced moderate rains on Saturday. The weather department has predicted more rain for the capital and other areas.

According to the forecast by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, “Moderate rain is likely at isolated places over Truvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal on the next 11.3 hours.”

“Light to moderate rain is likely to occur in Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Thirupattur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thiruchirappalli, Nilgiris and Thirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry districts from 1 to 3.”

On Saturday, cloudy weather led to brief spells of light in several parts of the city. Till 7.30 pm, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 4 mm and 0.4 mm while rain continued till evening.

Earlier, the IMD said that many parts of Tamil Nadu, especially the coastal regions, would receive rainfall on December 25 and 26 after a new low pressure area turned into a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

Under this influence, “Light to moderate rain at isolated places with heavy rainfall at many places is likely over south coastal Tamil Nadu on December 25 and 26, 2022,” the weather department said. Kerala will also receive isolated rains on December 26.

Wind speeds of 45-55 km/h gusting to 65 km/h are likely to prevail until the morning of December 25, with 40-50 km/h gusting to 60 km/h until the morning of the 26th. after that it will go down. The sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough till the morning of December 26 and the IMD warned fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Since October 1, Tamil Nadu has recorded 425.1 mm, which is 2% below normal and Chennai has recorded 884.7 mm, 12% above normal.
