The Winter Session of the Parliament starts today and will last until the 29th of the month. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a tweet that there will be 17 meetings spread over 23 days. He said that the government is looking forward to discussions on legislative business and other issues in a constructive manner. This will be the first session in which Deputy Speaker Jagdeep Dhankar, Speaker of the Rajya Sabha, will preside over the proceedings of the Upper House.

Before the session, an all-party meeting was held yesterday in Parliament in New Delhi. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and V. Muraleedharan were present in the meeting. Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, DMK leaders TR Balu and Tiruchi Shiva, TMC leaders Derek O’Brien and Sudeep Bandyopadhyay, CPI leader Binoy Vishwam and leaders of other political parties also attended the meeting. After the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government is ready to discuss any issue that the bench accepts in parliament.

Counting of votes for the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections will take place tomorrow. It will start at 8 am. The counting of polls for Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat and six assembly constituencies of 5 states will also be held tomorrow. These assembly constituencies are Rampur and Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh, Padampur in Odisha, Sardarshahar in Rajasthan, Kurhani in Bihar and Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh.

The Election Commission has taken elaborate measures to ensure smooth and peaceful counting. There will be 37 counting centers in Gujarat covering 182 Assembly seats. Ahmedabad district has a maximum of three counting centres, while Surat and Anand districts will have two counting centres. Talking to AIR, Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer P Bharati said that this time both EVMs and e-mail ballot papers will be counted simultaneously.

In Himachal Pradesh, counting will be done in 68 centers where mobile phone, iPad, laptop and other recording devices are banned. Talking to AIR, Chief Electoral Officer Himachal Manish Garg said three-tier security arrangements have been made for the counting.
