The Center has asked States and Union Territories to step up genome sequencing of positive samples because of the rise in cases of COVID in China, Japan, the United States of America, Korea and Brazil.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has written a letter to all Health Secretaries and Chief Secretaries of States and UTs. Mr. Bhushan said, this will enable timely detection of new variants circulating in the country. This will also facilitate the adoption of the necessary public health measures, he said.

It has asked all states to ensure that as many samples as possible of all positive cases are sent to designated Genome Sequencing Laboratories on a daily basis.

The secretary said that India has been able to limit the transmission of the COVID-19 virus by testing, monitoring, treating, vaccinating and adhering to the appropriate behaviors for testing, monitoring, treating, and treating COVID-19.
