Thrissur: Over 35 people were arrested on Friday at Mannamangalam Church in Thrissur following a clash between orthodox and Jacobite members of the Christian community, police said.

“We have registered a case against more than 115 people. We are analyzing the CCTV footage of the clash,” a senior police officer in the district told PTI.

Metropolitan Yuhanon Mar Meletius, bishop of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, has also been named as the main accused in the case, he said.

More than 15 people were injured in the clash.

The orthodox faction, which has been camping outside the church for the last few days, reportedly entered the Mannamangalam church, resulting in stone pelting and minor scuffles early on Friday morning.

Recently, a famous church in Piravom, controlled by the Jacobite faction, experienced a lot of tension when the police entered the premises to implement last year’s Supreme Court order, giving control of the church to the Orthodox party.

In its order, the Supreme Court ruled that the 1,100 parishes under the Malankara Church and their churches should be controlled by orthodox parties, as per the 1934 Malankara Church guidelines.
