The Principal Secretary of the Department of Social Justice has been assigned to model the rehabilitation procedure for the elderly.

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Social Justice Department wants to take up the rehabilitation of elderly people abandoned in hospitals.

“Facilities for rehabilitation of the elderly will be established in all institutions under the orphanage control committee,” said minister R Bindu.

The general secretary of the Department of Social Justice has been assigned to draft the procedures.

The guidelines were given by the minister at a meeting of the board officials, heads of the health and medical education department and officials of the social justice department in the presence of Health Minister Veena George.

It has been reported that a total of 29,767 elderly people can be accommodated in the 62 nursing homes directly run by the government and another 632 under the control committee of orphanages.

Today, there are 17,801 residents in these nursing homes.

On the other hand, the health department plans to ensure health facilities and distribution of medicines to the residents.
