Kozhikode: Railways announced 20 special trains for Kerala during the festival season. But from this there is only one train for Malabar region. Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Shoranur are not behind any other region in terms of number of passengers. Special trains will run from December 24th to January 4th.
The Kanyakumari-Mumbai train that has been announced for the Malabar region is by the Western Railway. This train will be crowded from Mumbai itself.
Normally Southern Railway sanctions more trains on Mangaluru-Thiruvananthapuram route. But this time, the railways have decided to run special trains only to Ernakulam, Kollam and Nagercoil. Even the buses to the region would be overcrowded.
Several passengers are currently on a waiting list. A large number of people travel from Kozhikode to Bengaluru and Chennai. These travelers will struggle to find travel options. Running Bengaluru-Kozhikode and Chennai-Kozhikode trains will be the solution to this problem.
The move to ignore the Malabar region comes at a time when towns and MPs are working on the development of railways and stations. People also point out that the railways will get a significant increase in revenue if more trains pass through Malabar during the festival season.
Southern Railway users’ forum general secretary R Prasanth Kumar said petitions have been submitted by all MPs from Malabar region.
