Tamil Nadu: Bull Training Begins for Jallikatu in Madurai Ahead of Pongal Festival

Madurai, December 18: Ahead of the Pongal festival, the bull trainers of Madurai in Tamil Nadu are gearing up for the famous ‘Jallikattu’. More than 20 youths from Podumbu village in Madurai district have started training more than ten bulls for the competition. The bulls are training to walk and swim.

Jallikattu, also known as ‘Eru Thazhuvuthal’ and ‘Mancuvirattu’, is an intense sport that will be held in a couple of weeks. A process called ‘Mann Kuthal’ is also carried out, where the bulls are trained to develop their skills by digging their horns into the wet ground. Bulls are ready to attack when someone tries to grab their hump. The Jallikattu Competition begins at Avaniyapuram village in Madurai.

Kottai Swami, bull owner said, “We have been training bulls in Jallikattu since 2017 and we have more than 10 bulls. Along with my 20 friends we are training ten bulls for the Jallikattu competition. We are feeding the bulls with food. cotton seeds and tamarind. Bulls for walking, swimming and we are training Mann Kuthal.”

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that the Jallikattu competition, the heroic sport of Tamils, will be held as planned in the upcoming Pongal, so the Youth have ventured out to train bulls for Jallikattu.

“I have been participating in Jallikattu since 2014. In the morning my friends get together and train the bulls by walking. We also give swimming and Mann Kuthal training,” said Saravana Kumar, another bull owner.
