The Tamil Nadu government has launched the ‘Friends of the Library’ program to promote reading.
By India Today Web Desk: The ‘Friends of Library’ programme, under which books will be provided directly to those unable to access state libraries, was launched by the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday.
School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who launched the programme, said the services of volunteers would be used for the purpose.
As a result, the project will help disabled people, the elderly, children and hospital patients, among others, who cannot visit a library.
Such people will receive books from the libraries from volunteers, he continued. Recipients must register at the appropriate library.
The program will involve 2,500 libraries in the initial phase, including 31 district libraries.
As a result of this program, a knowledge-based society should be promoted. The participants included district collector Dr S. Visakan, state food minister R Sakkarapani and others.
