The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and other districts of Tamil Nadu for the next two days.

According to a bulletin issued on Wednesday evening, the depression over Southeast Bengal intensified into a deep depression in the morning and at 08:30 it was centered over the southwest and Bay of Bengal, 500 km east of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. 630 km east-southeast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, about 690 km from the Karaikal region of the neighboring Union Territory Puducherry and about 770 km east-southeast of the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

It said the depression would move west-northwestward and intensify into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday evening and reach southwest Bengal over northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by Thursday morning.

“It will continue to move west-northwestwards towards northern Tamil Nadu – Puducherry and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next 48 hours,” the bulletin said.

Consequently, light to moderate rainfall is likely at few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Wednesday and from Thursday to December 11.

Extreme rainfall at one or two places, heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai

According to the bulletin, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkotai on Thursday. Heavy rainfall is likely over Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirapalli, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram.

Very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts on Friday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kallkurichi and Cuddalore. Isolated places of Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkotai, Sivaganga, Madurai and Dindigul will experience heavy rain.

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Tiruvallur districts on Saturday. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Kallakurichi and Villupuram districts.

Also on December 11, heavy rain is likely in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Nilbatore, Tiruppalli, Copripur, and Dindigul in Tamil Nadu. , Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Tenkasi districts.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in the state and Puducherry. While six teams are spread across Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Chennai districts, three are in the Union Territory two in Puducherry and one in Karaikal.
