Tourism will soon become the sector that defines the future of Kerala, said Promotion and Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas. The second edition of the five-day Beypore International Water Festival was opening in Beypore on Saturday evening.

The event is organized by Kerala Tourism in association with Kozhikode district administration and District Tourism Promotion Board. Mr. Riyas said that the festival would be held every year. The government was making plans to strengthen the rural economy by promoting the tourism potential of the villages, he added.

Tourism carnivals, recreational water sports, a visit to the Navy ship INS Kalpeni, surf demo and paramotor are some of the attractions of the festival. Water-based competitions, international kite festivals, cultural programmes, food festivals and a flea market at the Marina Beach and the banks of the Chaliyar river offered visitors a rare holiday experience, a release said.
