New Delhi:

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kirti Azad on Friday apologized for her remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attire, saying her party has always respected people of different ethnic backgrounds.

Taking to Twitter, the former Lok Sabha MP said his latest tweet was “misunderstood”.

“My last tweet was misunderstood. It hurt people’s feelings. I apologize. I have tremendous respect and pride for our different cultures. I regret the hurt caused by the unintentional remark. I reaffirm my commitment to work with our constitutional values always,” he said.

According to him, the Trinamool Congress has always respected people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

“Reflecting on the concerns raised by the people, I reiterate my commitment to work to uphold our constitutional values at every step. @AITCofficial has always respected people from diverse backgrounds and I wholeheartedly support the values our leaders uphold,” he said.

The TMC leader added that he has always followed the path set by the Constitution.

“As a soldier of the party, I have always followed the path established by our Constitution, which requires respecting and honoring our diversity. What appears as an inadvertent deviation from this path is absolutely unfortunate,” he added.

Mr Azad, a former Indian cricketer who was part of the country’s 1983 World Cup campaign, posted a photo of PM Modi in traditional Meghalaya tribal attire and compared it to a women’s dress.

Following his remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at the TMC leader and accused him of “disrespecting” Meghalaya’s culture and “mocking” the state’s tribal dress.

Mr Sarma has also asked the TMC to clarify whether it “accepts” Mr Azad’s views.
