Undergraduate and post-graduate students of public universities in Karnataka can take examinations in Kannada, English or a mixture of the two languages, the State Higher Education Council (SHEC) decided on Wednesday.
Until now, students had to write answers for a full question paper in either Kannada or English. But the new decision will allow them to attempt some questions in Kannada and some in English, depending on their convenience. This change was in polytechnic courses.
The decision was taken by SHEC’s annual general meeting convened by Higher Education Minister Dr. Ashwath Narayan. The meeting also decided to translate quality books into Kannada in line with the National Education Policy 2020 to promote higher education in regional languages.
It also decided to form a high-level committee to use technology in the translation process.
The minister stated that the meeting decided to conduct tribal studies in the existing Karnataka State Folklore University instead of setting up a new tribal university.
He stressed that as part of the “good governance month”, vice-chancellors and senior officials should visit the schools under their supervision and review the progress of the instructions. He added that there should be more investment and emphasis on research projects.
