Controversy surrounding the screening of Mammootty starrer Nanpakal Neerathu Mayakkam prompted audiences to protest against Ranjith.

At the closing ceremony of the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), Ranjith, president and director of the Kerala State Chalachitra Akademi, faced an unpleasant situation. When Ranjith stepped on the threshold to say a few words, he was greeted by cheers from the audience, who refused to let him speak.

Controversy surrounding the screening of Mammootty starrer Nanpakal Neerathu Mayakkam prompted audiences to protest against Ranjith. A few days ago, when the film was screened at the festival, it seems that many did not get a seat to watch it. Some delegates complained that people who did not have passes entered and this made it impossible to find seats. They criticized the bad management, which was the reason why the audience booed when Ranjith came on stage.

Ranjith retaliated against this personal attack on him and did not take it lightly. In his opening statement, Ranjith questioned whether the audience’s response was a standing ovation or a single impulse. He declared that the mockery will not demoralize him. The filmmaker added that a well-known journalist had warned him that some of the audience would show these behaviors.

Ranjith also addressed the audience saying, “I know many of you are hurt that you didn’t get a seat. However, Nanpakal Neerath Mayakam is going to release in theaters soon. I will be waiting to see how many people will watch it in the theaters.”
