Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district have arrested two of three people, who allegedly drugged, tortured and gang-raped a 35-year-old woman, a daily wage labourer, after locking her in a room for three days, officials said on Tuesday. .
The incident took place at Penamalur on the outskirts of Vijayawada on December 17-19. The woman ran away from them and was admitted to the Vijayawada government hospital.
Penamaluru police inspector M Satyanarayana said the arrested were identified as P Srinivas and Nagaraju alias Brahmam.
“We are looking for the third person, who is running away,” the inspector told HT.
According to Satyanarayana, the woman, who was estranged from her husband, was eking out a living as a construction worker on daily wages in Penamaluru. The accused are also daily wage workers and have developed knowledge with him.
“On the night of December 17, one of them took her to her bedroom near Sanath Nagar on the outskirts of Vijayawada and forced her to consume alcohol. Later, he called two more, and they sexually assaulted him. When he resisted, they beat him and branded him with cigarettes,” said the inspector.
The accused locked her in the room until Monday and continued to sexually assault her. “On Monday night, the woman managed to escape from the room and was admitted to the Vijayawada Government Hospital,” he said.
According to the information provided by the hospital authorities, the Penamaluru police went there and recorded the woman’s statement. “His health is fine today, and he may be discharged by Wednesday morning,” Satyanarayana said.
The police registered a case under Section 376D (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code, besides sections of unlawful confinement and torture. “The case is being investigated,” he added.
